Acadia: The Soul of a National Park
Published in Paperback by North Atlantic Books (April, 2003)
Author: Steve Perrin
Average review score:

Virtual winter walks for real summ strolls
All winter our hearts are on Mt. Desert Island, 750 I-95 miles north of us. All winter, with Steve Perrin's book, we take virtual hikes on "our" island. Come summer (well, in July anyway) when our hearts and bodies are actually in Acadia we can stroll those trails we now know are compatible with my two aging knees and Margaret's greatly dimished vision. Steve's words are more valuable than he knows: we teach people to be "audio describers" for folks who are visually impaired or blind so their ears can be their eyes in theaters, museums, and yes, for television. Steve's writing is truly audio description. This summer if we meet him again on the Shore Path we'll tell him in person. Until then, thanks, Steve.

Adventure Guide to the Catskills & Adirondacks (Adventure Guide Series)
Published in Paperback by Hunter Publishing, Inc. (March, 1995)
Author: Wilbur H. Morrison
Average review score:

Remarkable book!
Less than a day's drive from New York, Boston or Philadelphia, here are magical wilderness preserves, teeming with wildlife. Over 5,000 square miles of forests, lakes and mountains, the Adirondacks are among the most beautiful preserves in the world. The Catskills have deep gorges, great waterfalls, forested mountains, and some of the best fishing streams in the state.

Here is the best guide to these mountains, with tales of the early Indians who roamed the forests, the first explorers, and the constant wars among the French and British, then the American colonists, for control of the land. But the book is mainly a guide to enjoying the region today. After sections on how to get there, the quickest and most scenic routes to and through the parks, the author details the places to stay, everything there is to see and do, the public and private campsites, and the best hiking trails. You'll also find expert advice on hunting, fishing, wildlife photography or just the most beautiful places to relax. The print edition was 192 pages.

Definitive history
The continuing story of the Cherokees after their arrival in present day Oklahoma. A story of the conflicts both within and outside of the Cherokee Nation. The story of how the Cherokees battled to maintain their sovereignty and ultimately failed. Meticulously researched by McLoughlin through primary sources, an excellent history for anyone interested in Native American or Cherokee history. An typical example of what happened to all tribes in America.

A Nostagic Review of a past of my immigrant family
I have shown this book to many of the past residents the Brighton Allston area and they are so impressed with how much of the past is covered in these wonderful pictures and stories. It brings back many memmories of my growing up in an area that now seems so ideal even though we lived through a depression era. Thanks for the memories.

Along The Damariscotta, ME

Author: Dorothy A. Blanchard

Absorbing Photographs of a Beautiful Region
If you have been lucky enough to visit Lake Damariscotta, in Maine's midcoast region, you will love poring through the beautiful photographs in this collection. Ms. Blanchard has gathered numerous turn of the century black and white photos of both the Lake and Damariscotta River, as well as Boothbay Harbor, and assembled them here with some explanatory text. The book is relatively small, and could've been helped out a little with better paper and a larger, coffee-table format. But in any event I love this region, having visited the lake this past summer, and I enjoy picking up this collection periodically to get a glimpse of Maine's history.

Amagansett, NY
Published in Paperback by Arcadia Tempus Publishing Group, Inc. (01 June, 1997)
Authors: Carleton Kelsey and Lucinda Mayo
Average review score:

A delightful pictorial history
This is a lovely book chockablock full of photographs dating from 1853 which depict life in this coastal village on Long Island. For me the devastation of the Hurricane of 1938 provides some of the most dramatic photos, while the chaos of the war years provides a great deal of the drama. Most interesting is historian Lucinda Mayo's account of the only other terrorist attack on the American mainland besides the horrors of Sept. 11, 2001. On the morning of June 13, 1942 eight German sabateurs landed in a submarine on Amagansett beach with the intention of moving inland and attacking the Tennesee Valley hydroelectric plants. Fortunately, they were caught by authorities before they could fulfil their nefarious plans.
Carton Kelsey's voluminous research and Lucinda Mayo's crisp writing style make this book one that will stay on my shelf for a long, long while. A great read!

Amc Field Guide to the New England Alpine Summits (Appalachian Mountain Club)
Published in Paperback by Appalachian Mountain Club Books (May, 1995)
Authors: Nancy G. Slack and Allison W. Bell
Average review score:

A history, guide and plant guide for alpine adventures.
This little book covers the history, geology, weather and climate of the New England mountain summits. It takes you upward through the northern hardwood forest, transition zone, spruce-fir zone, balsam fir zone and the alpine zone. It is an identification guide to the plants, their habitats and communities. Animals -- birds, amphibians, mammals and insects -- are described. The book design and layout are clear and attractive. I give the photos A, the reproduction A-. There is an index to the illustrated species, scientific and common names. Altogether it is an exquisite, small book to carry on the trail and to enjoy by the fireside. 96 pages.

AMC River Guide Maine, 3rd

The best guide to rivers in Maine
This is the guide book to get if you are thinking of doing a river trip in Maine. The information in it has been thoroughly checked and is very accurate. It tells you if you need permits for campsites and even tells you the quality for those sites. It has excellent detailed descriptions of all significant rapids and even suggests the best route to take. It has every conceivable trip from a half-day to a week or more. As a professional in the field, this is a book that I rely when planning any canoe expeditions in the state.
